Term 2: Social Stencil Community of Practice Extension Seminar 12th June
This workshop will be presented by program author Dr Connie Buckingham, discussing activites and support required in facilitating a Neuroaffirming Social Skills Group.
Connie has over 16 years facilitating small social skills groups, initially within schools, then later within private practice.
Connie has always had a passion for delivering Social Skills Group Programs. Indeed the groups we were running in the late 90’s and early 2000’s were not neuroaffirming. They were designed to teach children how to socialise, listen, play and communicate in neurotypical ways, denying their own style and identify. And so, masking was the way.
With the help of advocates with lived experience, we’ve realised that this old way is not ok. We can still run Social Skills Groups, but they’re different now.
Neuroaffirming social skills groups are different from historical, neuronormative social skills groups where social goals were based on neurotypical social skills. Neuroaffirming social skills groups still aim to support group members to develop their skills, but the intention, goals and process is different.
Join Dr Connie Buckingham on the 12th of June to find out more.
